Duloe Stone CircleOS Ref: SX236583 / 201 Type: Small Stone Circle Access: Good Disabled: Yes - in dry weather. There is a reasonably clear path. This is a delightful little circle in the village of Duloe. Until 1858 the circle was bisected by a hedge which was removed by a Plymouth vicar, the Rev. B A Bewes. The circle was "officially" recognised in 1801 but was actually recorded in 1329. The hedge being removed, some restoration took place in 1961 when the largest stone was, unfortunately, 'broken and left prostrate'. An urn was discovered beneath the stone but apparently broken by a workman's pickaxe before its importance was recognised. The dust inside vanished in the air.
Duloe Stone circle is unusual in Cornwall owing to the combination of small diameter (less than 12m) and large stones. It was built about 4,000 years ago. Made of quartzite rock, the stones to this day appear a good white colour.
I suspect that this circle was a 'family' one, however, who knows? It was nice to visit and rather charming but I did not feel it was a circle where I would tend to spend too long - not isolated enough, maybe ... It certainly has the advantage of being easy to get to. Duloe with Evening Moon
On a clear, warm evening with the moon traversing the heavens, there are few if no visitors and it is a truly enchanting circle to be at. |
